Zeeland Refinery, together with the government, is taking a first step in tailor-made agreements for further sustainability plans

Today, Zeeland Refinery and the Dutch government reached an important milestone in their joint pursuit of accelerated sustainability. Minister Micky Adriaansens (Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate), State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) and Jessica Hahn (General Manager Zeeland Refinery) signed a declaration of intent, called the Expression of Principles (EoP), which forms the basis for tailor-made agreements between Zeeland Refinery and the Dutch government. With these agreements, both parties aim for accelerated sustainability of Zeeland Refinery, with an eye for the living environment and nature.

With the signing of the EoP, the national government, the province of Zeeland and Zeeland Refinery are reaching out to each other to jointly realise the sustainability ambitions of Zeeland Refinery. The tailor-made agreements aim to bring about an acceleration and to go further in sustainability than is legally established in the area of climate objectives.

For this acceleration in sustainability, the collaboration between Zeeland Refinery and the government is essential. Think of collaboration and knowledge sharing in the field of legislation and regulations, energy infrastructure, permits and market stimulation.

The Expression of Principles describes the ambitions that Zeeland Refinery will study in the coming months:

  • A reduction of 1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2030 (compared to 2022)
  • A reduction of 10% to 50% of NOx emissions in 2030 (compared to 2022)
  • A reduction of 10% to 50% of ‘fresh’ water consumption in 2030 (compared to 2022)

Zeeland Refinery is investigating several scenarios in which different techniques are applied to realize these ambitions.

In the next phase, the Joint Letter of Intent (JLOI), all parties involved will further elaborate on these intentions and ultimately convert them into concrete tailor-made agreements.

In this way, Zeeland Refinery hopes to make a substantial contribution to achieving the Dutch climate objectives, further improving the living environment and developing a circular economy.

Jessica Hahn, General Manager of Zeeland Refinery: “ This is an important step for the further sustainability process of Zeeland Refinery. By setting out the lines for our sustainability together with the governments involved, we learn a lot from each other. We gain insight into each other’s possibilities and limitations, so that we can better support each other to take additional steps towards a climate-neutral future. “
