Gasunie and North Sea Port have signed a key agreement to jointly develop the Hydrogen Delta Network NL — a new regional hydrogen transport network in Zeeland. This initiative builds on Zeeland’s existing role as a hydrogen hub and represents a major step toward realizing the Netherlands’ 2030 and 2050 climate targets.
The regional hydrogen infrastructure will connect in the coming years to both the national Dutch hydrogen backbone and the Belgian hydrogen network, reinforcing Zeeland’s strategic energy position in Northwest Europe.
Zeeland: A National Hydrogen Powerhouse
Hydrogen already plays a major role in the Zeeland industrial cluster.
With 520,000 tonnes of hydrogen consumed annually, Zeeland accounts for 35% of the Netherlands’ total hydrogen demand — a figure that highlights the region’s importance in the energy transition.
Focus Areas: Infrastructure, Electrolysis, and Import
To make the hydrogen economy a reality, development is underway in several areas:
- Infrastructure
The Hydrogen Delta Network NL will lay the foundation for transporting hydrogen safely and efficiently across the region and into the national grid. - Electrolysis
Projects are being developed to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis powered by sustainable electricity — particularly offshore wind energy. These initiatives aim to decarbonize industrial processes and create a future-proof energy supply. - Hydrogen Import
Zeeland’s access to deep-sea ports in North Sea Port makes the region well-suited for the import and storage of hydrogen. Port-based terminals and logistics hubs are expected to play a key role in the hydrogen value chain.
